Before putting any effort whatsoever into creating any web pages you should have considered how you intend to get people to visit and ‘consume’ your content. Be it selling a product or service or conveying an opinion or information you want to get attention and this means getting traffic. You need a significant proportion of your traffic to come from the search engines. Certainly the lowest cost and best targeted traffic will always be brought to you by the search engines.

Search engines stay in business by understanding what the user are searching for and delivering relevant results. The delivery of relevant and accurate results to searchers is the key objective for search engines and is a major factor is maintaining and increasing user loyalty. The more often the searchers return the greater the search engines fortunes. The objectives for you and your web pages is precisely the same as the search engines.Make your users experience your number one priority so they return to your web pages time and time again.

So what exactly must you do?. There are two paths to achieving this and the good news is you can if you have the money do both. You can submit high quality content to the web or you can use advertising often called Pay Per Click (PPC) or in the case of Google ‘adwords’.

Search engines see nothing but keywords or key phrases everything else on the Internet is invisible. Searches always begin with the entry of a keyword or phrase into the ‘search box’. The search engine performs a look up on its enormous indexes to fetch a list of web pages that contain instances of the keyword and returns them in a predefined order of relevance. The search engines decision about what pages to display in the results are based upon two key factors relevance and authority.

Authority is a function of the back links to a web page and relevance is largely down to on page factors such as the number of times a keyword appears on the web page. The profile in terms of authority and the volume of back links are used by the search engines in deciding the position or ranking of a web page in the list of search results.

Back links are the most important factor in optimising your pages for the search engines.

Back links not only determine your position in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) but are a major source of visitor traffic. People searching for and reading relevant content will click on the back links that contain text related to their quest and subsequently be directed to your web pages. This text in the back link is known as ‘anchor text’ and this too is taken into consideration by the search engines. Each back link has a value associated with it which can vary depending upon its origin.

The search engines give authority to web pages which can be passed on to your web pages through the back links. The higher the authority of the linking pages, the higher is the authority passed to your pages.
