I am interested in starting a public relations firm in Illinois, but am unsure of the best way to go. Any advice, suggestions or ideas?
Hi I am thinking about doing the same here in Florida. You need to figure out what your key selling point is. What is it about your firm that sets you apart from others? Then you need to do the following:
- Get your ducks in line before you start (LLC, business contracts, business needs (computers, phones, fax) and PR software/media database)
- Form a business plan focusing on attracting new business an methods of doing such
- Start small and work your way up (you likely won't be getting the major retainer fees, but take smaller projects that build your portfolio for ever increasing clients)
- Be a PR person yourself. You have to be a "mover and shaker" because that's how the best business comes about. Join chamber of commerces, boards and the such to meet people and always remember to sell your business. You need to be constantly doing PR for your business and yourself in addition to your clients.
